International orders please place through our bandcamp.

"an interesting and unlikely combination of shoegaze noisiness (and occasionally droniness), Guided by Voices-style hooks, and hardcore punk energy. If, like me, your anglophilic tendencies encompass everything from the Buzzcocks to Ride to Blur to Blitz to Mega City Four you will almost certainly like this. Killer, heavy, guitar-oriented pop" - Sorry State

New - Kent State - Crashing Satellites

Kent State are a four piece out of LA, headed by Nicholas Vance (a busy man having founded several other bands in addition to running his own record label Paranoid Futures and composing music for television and film). If the low-fi rawness of their sound wasn’t enough of an indicator, and the fact that The Wrong Side of History is a collection of tracks previously released only to tape, Vance has that DIY ethos that we here at Opinears not only appreciate but massively respect. This guy is just giving music away on his website (The Wrong Side of History is free on bandcamp, but also selling it on blue vinyl for the low price of ten bucks). You can get someone to listen to your music by making it free, but you make a fan when that music is also good.

So, how do we describe Kent State? Well they did all the work for me by describing themselves as psychedelic death pop. After giving their latest release, a few listens I couldn’t agree more with this self assessment. Crashing Satellites pretty much showcases all those elements: fuzzy echo effects abound in the vocals, off kilter guitar chords and fun poppy drums to wiggle to. Hundred Years War and 2814 (this one starts off with a really rad surf guitar) are other favorites of mine.

You can just sense that these guys will do a number on your hearing after seeing them. The Wrong Side of History is one of the more ambitious and strange (I like strange!)  lo-fi albums I’ve heard this year , not sticking to any one sort of formula and never a moment dull.  The entire album gives you this sense that something is creeping in the shadows, ready to put it’s cold hand on your shoulder and pull you in. Don’t be afraid though, it’s way more fun in the dark. -a

KENT STATE this Friday at The Echoplex!!!!

Hey everybody! It’s business as usual around here and I have a million things going on at once.

First off, there is a Kent State LP 16 song collection coming out in July called The Wrong Side of History being released on Paranoid Futures/ Debt Offensive Records.

We’ve just released the Kent State Live On KUCI digitally. You can go check it out on the KS bandcamp. As usual it is streaming/free download.

We had some problems with the Kent State/ Shivering Window split tape but it should be out very soon and will ship as soon as we get them. Thanks to all who have ordered, and thank you so much for you patience. For those who wanna check it out, it is available to stream/DL on the bandcamp page as well.

Unfortunately we have had to postpone the Kent State Eats Coast tour for a number of personal reasons. We are gonna hit the road as soon as we can!

In other exciting news, SUSPECT is tracking songs for their new 10 song 12” ep today. Expect an late summer release for this one. We are working with a really awesome label, we just gotta keep it quiet for now! The tape will be released on Paranoid Futures.

the SUSPECT cassettes of the demo are almost gone so grab them while you can from our webstore!
It will be re-released soon on 7” by Six Feet Under Records.

For those who don’t know, I recently joined a shoegaze/ noispop band from Los Angeles called Tennis System. Great dudes, great songs and it’s been a lot of fun so far! We recently played an MTV event called the O Music Awards. Check out footage of a song we played that night called Such A Drag here.

We have some cool shows coming up!
July 5th   -Kent State at the Echo w/ The Oblivians, Fuzz, Milk Music, The Intelligence and more!
July 28th -Tennis System at the Echo w/ Weekend & Surf Club
